Tinnitus is a condition where an individual perceives sound in the absence of an external source. The sound can be described as ringing, buzzing, or more complex sounds, and can vary in intensity and duration. In some cases, it can be described as a pulsating sound.
It is a common condition, with approximately 1 in 10 people experiencing Tinnitus occasionally and 1 in 8 people experiencing it regularly.
Tinnitus can be caused by hearing loss and/or blockage of earwax. If the latter is the case, the condition usually goes away once the earwax is removed.
When sound waves enter the ear, they travel through a complex system and reach the cochlea, which is shaped like a snail shell.
The cochlea contains thousands of tiny hairs that convert the sound waves into electrical signals. These signals are then transmitted to the hearing nerve and sent to your brain, where they are interpreted as sound.
If any part of this is not functioning properly, it can reduce the number of electrical signals sent to the brain, and your brain may fill in the gaps with its own interpretation, leading to Tinnitus.
The causes of Tinnitus can be broadly classified into two categories: Sensorineural and conductive.
Sensorineural Tinnitus - Usually due to exposure to loud noises, genetic factors or ageing. This can be common if you regularly listen to very loud music or if you work with heavy machinery.
Conductive Tinnitus - Usually linked to a blockage of some sort stopping natural sounds passing through the ear, such as earwax, or an ear-related condition such as a perforated eardrum, infections, Otosclerosis or Meniere’s disease.
On occasion, Tinnitus can be linked to other conditions such as head/neck injuries, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain cancer treatments.
Tinnitus can be caused by many different factors and a blockage in the ear is one.
However, this isn't always the case and some people can live with Tinnitus for years without having an ear blockage.
While there is no cure, there are some ways to manage it and reduce symptoms to allow you to live comfortably.
